Best winter reads 2017 – For your perusing pleasure
'You can never get a cup of tea large enough or a book long enough to suit me.'
– C. S. Lewis.
Now that it's winter, we're inclined to agree with Mr Lewis. So indulge in our list of the best winter reads 2017 has to offer. We've chosen our favourite from the Man Booker shortlist, a chilling ghost story and Young Adult fiction that's been billed as the next Harry Potter.
It's a time for curling up and staying warm with nothing but the pages of your trusted companion for company. These recommendations will ensure that you pick a good one. Happy reading.
It's not often a children's book makes an adult list, but the whole publishing world is all a-twitter about this debut, which is hyped to be as magical as Harry Potter. In Nevermoor, outcast Morrigan Crow is doomed to die on her 9th birthday, but she's rescued and sent to the city of Nevermoor to compete against hundreds of other gifted children – it sounds like author Jessica Townsend has that Hunger Games format down perfectly, but this tale is billed to have far more of Rowling's charm.
Australian author Townsend has worked on her story for a decade. It was the subject of an eight-house bidding war after Frankfurt Book Fair and film rights have already gone to 20th Century Fox. An exciting prospect.
