Marvel appears to reach the absolute peak of its own peppy likeableness and arch self-referentiality with Homecoming, which is just as well: this is the gazillionth Spider-Man movie in only fifteen years, and it's going to need to be special to keep the web-slinging superhero from seeming stale.

Sofia Coppola's Civil War drama is a bit of a feminist fever-dream, the story of a handsome soldier who finds himself in a porny male fantasy – living in a boarding school full of frustrated young women – and comes to regret it.

If you're worried that Terrance Malick is in a creative fallow period, it's worth remembering that he's always divided people, particularly since 2005's The New World. Song for Song might be as disappointing as Knight of Cups, but it might also be as exquisite as Tree of Life.

Interestingly, this looks like something of a divergence for director Christopher Nolan. Instead of bringing us a mind-bending sci-fi of inter-dimensional travel, à la Inception or Interstellar, Dunkirk looks like a good old-fashioned war movie. Unless Harry Styles plays a time-traveller.
