Following in the footsteps of Billy Elliot, The Full Monty, Made in Dagenham and Calendar Girls, yet another feel-good British film will grace the West End. Mrs Henderson Presents the musical premiered at the Theatre Royal Bath to warm reviews and a sold out run.
Based on the BAFTA and Olivier-winning film, this new show is a celebration of all things British and proof that homegrown musicals can stand their own among broadway imports. With music by George Fenton and Simon Chamberlain, lyrics by Don Black and a book by Terry Johnson, it has all the trappings of a West End classic.
Based on the hit BAFTA and Oscar award-winning film, Mrs Henderson Presents, the musical was bound to be a success. And the real life story of Soho's Windmill Theatre finds its natural home on stage. The titular Mrs Henderson (who will be played by Olivier-winning Tracie Bennett) is recently widowed and decides to use the theatre for Vaudeville shows to entertain the troops and keep spirits up during the war. Even as bombs fall on London, the theatre stays open and becomes renowned for its 'show must go on' stoicism. Song and dance are the ideal partner for this story of racy Vaudeville shows and wartime spirit.
Trail-blazing theatre this is not — but if you're looking for pure entertainment, Mrs Henderson Presents won't disappoint.
