The stage version of the Xanadu Musical brings 80s kitsch and a stellar songs including 'Magic' and the title track 'Xanadu' to the Southwark Playhouse this winter.
In a marvellous montage of all things 1980s, Xanadu began as a film starring Olivia Newton John and Gene Kelly with music by the Electric Light Orchestra. Though the chipper cheesiness of the film didn't impress when it was released, the soundtrack did, and, over time the retro appeal has led to a cult fan base.
The musical fantasy features roller-skates, ruffles and a romance between a beautiful muse descended from Mount Olympus and a struggling artist in Venice Beach, California. But, alas, their divine inspiration (to create the first roller disco) is under threat from jealous celestial onlookers.
First adapted for the stage in 2007, Xanadu musical was a surprise hit on Broadway, winning a Critics Circle and Drama Desk award and four Tony nominations.
Now this delightfully flamboyant fantasy musical will be revived in full roller-skating glory at the Southwark Playhouse. Fresh from a run in Kinks musical Sunny Afternoon, Carly Anderson will swap 60s tunes for 80s pop to play Kira, the muse sent down to earth. She'll be joined by musical theatre veterans including Olivier-nominated Alison Jiear (recently a finalist on Britain's Got Talent) and Wicked star Samuel Edwards.
Don't expect poignant plot twists and subtly, but if you're looking for fun, feel-good musical theatre with infectiously uplifting songs and dance numbers on roller-skates, book now for Xanadu at the Southwark Playwright.
