As part of the London International Festival of Theatre (LIFT), the award-winning Belarus Free Theatre is returning to the Young Vic to explore some of the world’s worst disasters, inflicted by humans and nature alike.

Belarus Free Theatre will combine tales of destruction, from Chernobyl to Fukushima, with myths and folklore from Belarus, Brazil, Nigeria and India, marrying truth and fiction to capture the chaos wreaked by environmental and man-made influences. Promising live music and choreography, this will be a challenging but theatrically thrilling examination of devastation.

The theatre company was originally established to resist the censorship of the authoritarian regime in Belarus, and has since faced much persecution in its home country. It now creates half of its work in London, where it is an associate of the Young Vic, while continuing to hold secret performances in Belarus.

As part of what promises to be an exciting and eclectic line-up at LIFT, Red Forest offers a tantalising opportunity to experience this acclaimed company’s pioneering work.

Under current artistic director David Lan, the Young Vic has gained a reputation for attracting some of the best theatre from all over the world, including big-name directors, writers and actors. For a fraction of West End ticket prices, theatregoers heading south of the river can catch established artists as well as up-and-coming talents in the theatre’s three flexible spaces.

Not to be confused with the Old Vic just down the road, the Young Vic is a short walk from both Southwark and Waterloo stations. It’s also within walking distance of the buzzing cultural hub of the South Bank, where you can grab dinner, have a drink on the riverfront or take in some art on the way to the theatre.

Ev Restaurant and Deli, tucked behind the nearby Southwark underground station, offers great-value Turkish cuisine and some of the best hummus in London. Or, for those who prefer not to venture out of the theatre, the Young Vic’s own bar and restaurant offers a range of play-themed dishes.
