If you were lucky enough to witness the 2009 theatrical masterpiece, Jerusalem, then you won't want to miss Mojo. The run has been extended and there are still some tickets available for performances in this final week.
Mojo unites two of British theatre’s greatest collaborators, writer Jez Butterworth and director Ian Rickson, who have reunited to stage a revival of their 1995 Olivier-award winning play. It is a fast-talking, violence soaked comedy, which takes place in the seedy underworld of Soho’s Atlantic Club. Set in 1958, it tells the story of a gang’s attempt to recover and take revenge for the kidnapping of a talented teenage rock singer, Silver Johnny.
This play won every award going when it was shown first time around at the Royal Court. It was subsequently made into a film, in which Harold Pinter made an appearance. Indeed Pinter became a mentor to Butterworth, teaching him 'a sense of fearlessness. To know that when you close your eyes and jump off the ledge, hands will hold you.' How fitting, then, that Mojo is coming to the theatre renamed the Harold Pinter Theatre in 2011 as a tribute to the late playwright.
The cast includes Harry Potter star Rupert Grint, who is making his West End debut. The actor we associate with Ron Weasley is playing Sweets, an amphetamine-addicted junior gang member. Rickson felt there was something 'ordinary and centred' about him – a 'grittiness' he was looking for. It will be interesting to see how Grint makes the transition; Harry Potter is a hard shadow to dodge.
Starring alongside Grint are the young English actor Ben Whishaw, known for his stage role as Hamlet, Brendan Coyle, of Downton Abbey fame, and Daniel Mays, who played Ronnie Biggs in the ITV drama.
The reviews are unanimous: this is not a production to miss. A piece of advice, though - brush up on your gangland vocabulary. The cockney rhyming slang comes so thick and fast you may be begging for subtitles.
