Childhood memories of any trip to London’s museum district always begin with an excited journey through the tunnel from South Kensington tube station. However many times we’d run up and down, whether the exhibition ahead contained steam trains or Tyrannosaurus Rex, this was a reliable constant.
And now a new theatre company, Antic Face, are bringing us a Greek Tragedy from these very tunnels. In fact, our directions to the venue involve turning right at the ticket barriers from the station. It is truly exciting for theatre to intrude into our everyday world in this way, and we imagine the bowels of the V+A to be suitably full of Victorian gloom and atmosphere.
And Hippolytos is certainly full of sordid psychological depths; a woman falls in love with her stepson, who rejects her advances with misogynist fury, leading to her suicide. The gods get involved in this family drama, and the characters are further and further entangled towards its bloody conclusion.
The director/ actor team behind the company, just out of university, have assembled an impressive and experienced cast; Hippolytos in the tunnels might very well be an underground hit.
