Using songs from early in Stephen Sondheim’s career that were intended for, but never made it into, his full-length musicals, Marry Me a Little is a musical revue that tells the story of two singletons alone on a Saturday night in their apartments, never knowing that the other is just one floor away.
Devised by Craig Lucas and Norman Rene, the show was first conceived when Lucas, performing in the original Broadway production of Sweeney Todd, gained permission from Sondheim to use this ‘spare’ music and create a new show.
This is not director Hannah Chissick’s first venture into a Sondheim revue, having previously directed Side By Side by Sondheim at the Venue Theatre, and the addition of musical director David Randall makes for a production team with a wealth of experience.
The songs in this show may be Sondheim’s lesser known, but this doesn't mean they are less enjoyable. If you're a Sondheim fan, Marry Me a Little is a charming way to discover his full musical repertoire.
