10 Olivier Award nominated plays to watch

It’s Britain’s highest accolade celebrating the best professional theatre to grace the London stage. The Olivier Awards 2019 were announced on Facebook Premiere today by last year’s winners Sheila Atim (Girl from the North Country) and Giles Terera (Hamilton).
Olivier judges consider the best plays, musicals and dance theatre of the year across a range of categories. Sadly, many of the nominated production runs have now ended. But worry not, there are still plenty on show or shortly returning to London for you to enjoy.

Come From Away, Phoenix Theatre

Come From Away tells the true story of a small Canadian town where 38 planes had to be suddenly grounded following 9/11. The musical is leading the scoreboard this year with nine nominations, including Best New Musical and Best Director.

Stephen Sondheim and George Furth's Company set new records in 1970 with 14 Tony nominations. 48 years later, its gender-switched revival has wowed again with nine Olivier Award nominations including Best Musical Revival and nominations for actors Rosalie Craig and Patti LuPone.

Six: The Musical, Arts Theatre

Divorced, beheaded, died – we all know how it goes. But the six wives of Henry VIII are fed up of being ‘just one word in a stupid rhyme’. In Six: The Musical, they take to the stage to tell their own stories, through the medium of majestic pop. Six received five nominations, including Outstanding Achievement in Music and Best New Musical. 'The Queens' all receive nominations for Best Supporting Actress.

Tina, Aldwych Theatre

From humble beginnings in the Nutbush City Limits to rock and roll world domination, Tina celebrates a star who refused to be limited or defined by her age, race or gender. Kobna Holdbrook-Smith and Adrienne Warren are nominated for Best Actress and Best Actor in a Musical as Ike and Tina Turner.

The Price, Wyndham's Theatre

Two brothers are reunited in a New York apartment to sell their father's furniture in this Arthur Miller play. The Price is nominated for Cunard Best Revival. David Suchet and Adrian Lukis receive a Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor nomination.

Judy has chosen to go back in time and live as a 1950s housewife, but the modern world keeps banging at her perfectly painted door. Laura Wade's play receives five nominations for Best New Comedy, Best Costume Design and Best Set Design. Katherine Parkinson and Susan Brown are nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Bea and Aaron are dating in a dystopian future where everything from bank loans to jobs is determined from a single blood test. Ella Road’s debut play is moving on upwards to Hampstead Theatre's main stage after a hugely successful run in its Downstairs theatre. It is nominated for the Outstanding Achievement in Affiliate Theatre category.

The Lehman Trilogy, Piccadilly Theatre

Stefan Massini’s five-hour long play about the Lehman brothers will return from New York and transfer to the West End after an impressive run at the National Theatre. It received five nominations: Best Set Design, Best Sound Design and Best New Play. Simon Russell Beale is nominated for Best Actor and Sam Mendes is nominated for Best Director.

Europe’s director of the moment, Ivo van Hove, translates a Hollywood classic for the stage with this sly, stylish production. Gillian Anderson and Monica Dolan are nominated for Best Actress and Best Supporting Actress.

Sweat, Gielgud Theatre

After a sellout, four-star run at the Donmar Warehouse, Sweat transfers to the West End's Gielgud Theatre for a limited run from 7 June to 20 July with Martha Plimpton reprising her role as Tracey. Sweat is nominated for Best New Play.
