The story is time-old, but its themes are timeless: love, marriage and children don’t always mean a happy ending. The Duchess of Malfi comes to the Almeida stage. The Jacobean revenge tragedy is reimagined by director Rebecca Frecknall, who recently impressed with Summer and Smoke.

Hats off – Caryl Churchill’s social allegory and dystopian drama is revived by director Lyndsey Turner at the Donmar this February. Written in 2000, Far Away centres around Joan, a milliner who designs hats for prisoners.

Shakespeare's villainous king Richard III is reimagined in an all-American high-school setting in provocatively named new play Teenage Dick, which has its London premiere in December at the Donmar Warehouse. Dick – modelled on Plantagenet king Richard III – is an underdog who dissembles his way to power.

A starry team assemble to transform Chekhov's Uncle Vanya for a new West End production. Olivier-winning playwright Conor McPherson, whose hits include Girl From the North Country and The Weir, re-works the 1898 classic to explore the passion, humour and frustration of life at the turn of the century.

Blithe Spirit, Duke of York's Theatre

After an impressive opening at Theatre Royal Bath in summer 2019, Richard Eyre's revival of Blithe Spirit embarks upon a UK tour that culminates in a six-week run in the West End. Noël Coward's 1941 comedy is known and loved for its preposterous main character, a spirit medium played by Jennifer Saunders.

The Doctor, Duke of York's Theare

Robert Icke's The Doctor, starring Juliet Stevenson, transfers to the West End after a stunning, five-star premiere at the Almeida. The play questions the roles of religion versus medicine and whether the identities we carve out for ourselves in life can ever override the labels bestowed on us from birth.
