Loot, Park Theatre

Loot, Joe Orton's seminal black comedy, is revived at the Park Theatre 50 years after the playwright was murdered by his partner Kenneth Halliwell.

When it was first performed in 1966, Loot was heavily censored. The Evening Standard Award-winning play tells the story of friends who rob a bank, hide the spoils in coffin, and come up with increasingly elaborate ways of avoiding a grieving widower and an unhinged police officer. But it was the references to homosexuality (which was still illegal when Loot was written) which riled the lord chamberlain and were cut from the premiere production.

Now, for the first time, Loot will be performed uncensored, as Orton wrote it. The playwright's sister gave her permission to use the original uncut script.

It's a farcical, mischievous show, which will remind current audiences of the impact Orton had during a prolific career, prematurely cut short.
