The film, which won four Academy Awards, is based on William Thackery's novel, set in 18th Century England. It follows an Irish rogue (Ryan O'Neal) who seduces a rich widow to secure her dead husband's aristocratic position.
Rife with rich, painterly imagery, revolutionary candlelit visuals and Kubrick's epic cinematic touch, the film won Oscars for Best Costume, Best Music, Best Set Direction and Best Cinematography, and is a powerful observation of beauty and betrayal. The screening will be followed by a panel discussion between Kubrick collaborator Jan Harlan, actor-director Richard Ayoade (Submarine, The IT Crowd) and academic Maria Pramaggiore, author of Making Time in Stanley Kubrick's Barry Lyndon.
