The world is abuzz with Mindfulness right now. Concentrating on the breath is the new black and it’s Ruby Wax who has made it fashionable. In what promises to be an entertaining exchange, the comedian and ‘It Girl’ for mental illness is going to talk to her friend the novelist Kathy Lette about the technique which has helped her kick depression into touch.
For years Wax presented herself on television as an exuberant, bouncy, life-loving celebrity interviewer. Deep down she was dogged by depression, but she didn't dare reveal this to the world. Not so, now. She tells us how she has tried pills, therapy and the Priory, but believes Mindfulness to be ‘the greatest elixir’. By sitting quietly and paying attention to your thoughts, emotions and feelings, without judgement, you can actually change your brain chemistry and therefore the way you think, she says, citing evidence from neuroscience.
She is not into 'whiney' self-help, she says. Rather she is interested in giving a comic account of how the mind works. Her talk is likely to be fascinating, moving and funny.
