Ulay (Uwe Frank Lausiepen) is a pioneer of polaroid photography and a crucial figure in European performance art, who you may best know for his collaborations with Marina Abramović.
Ulay and Marina Abramović
A decade of groundbreaking work by the duo (1976-1989), who described themselves as two heads of the same body, saw famous performances such as: the pair running into each other repeatedly in a blend of male and female energy; standing naked together in a doorway, forcing the public to squeeze between them; and balancing on opposite sides of a drawn bow and arrow pointed directly at Marina's heart. When the relationship ended, the couple made a spiritual journey from opposite ends of the Great Wall of China to meet in the middle and say goodbye.
ICA event 2015
At this ICA artist talk, Ulay will discuss his unique practice with Catherine Wood, Curator of Contemporary Art and Performance at Tate Modern, alongside the release of Maria Rus Bojan's book Whispers: Ulay on Ulay. Don't miss this rare opportunity to gain an insight into one of the most important artists working in Europe today.
