His creativity and distinctive brand of physical comedy was behind another tv hit, Fawlty Towers, before he graduated to the big screen by co-writing and starring in A Fish Called Wanda with Jamie Lee Curtis. Throw some theatre roles, pop-up parts in two Bond films and a whole array of comedy cameos and you have all the makings for an unparalleled career.

In the flesh Cleese towers at 6ft 4 and, true to his height, has plenty of stage presence. At the ripe age of 75 his vitality and infectious joie-de-vivre shows no sign of dwindling.
