This Christmas, you're invited to mingle with some of Britain's best-loved poets in the illustrious environs of Faber & Faber's historic headquarters. F&F is one of the last great independent publishing houses in London with a long and fruitful past. Its first editor was none other than T.S. Eliot and the company has helped launched the careers of literary giants including Seamus Heaney, Ted Hughes and Sylvia Plath.
This December, Faber is offering a unique opportunity to hear three of the UK's most exciting voices reading live from their collections old and new. Taking place in the heart of bustling Bloomsbury, poets Wendy Cope, Clare Pollard and recent TS Eliot Prize shortlisted poet, Daljit Nagra, will perform their work, with music from acclaimed pianist Stephen Plaistow.
Wendy, who worked as a primary school teacher in London for many years, is loved for her wise, witty and sometimes barbed verse which often pokes fun at our preconceived ideas of love. Who can forget her lines: 'Bloody men are like bloody buses...'
Daljit Nagra, who is also a teacher, is an equally engaging poet who, in his first collection, Look We Have Coming to Dover!, explored the idea of 'British-ness' and the limits of language from a Asian perspective to devastating and often humorous effect.
The third star of the night is Clare Pollard, who is renowned for her energetic readings and 'raw, reckless and bloody-minded' poetry (according to fellow poet Selima Hill) which draws on ancient myth and the modern register.
If that engaging trio doesn't tempt you, Faber also promises mulled wine, minced pies and music including Haydn, Bach, Beethoven, Schubert and Debussy all adding to the festive atmosphere.
We suggest you don't miss the chance to listen to these stellar poets, and a wonderful pianist, in one of the most atmospheric venues around. Tickets are selling fast, so hurry!
