Few contemporary artists are as interested in the human body as Antony Gormley. Due to its intimate concern with the body in relation to space, his practice shares striking parallels with the work of choreographers, and the intriguing relationship between visuals arts and dance forms the subject of his talk at the Lilian Baylis Studio on 9 December.
Antony Gormley: Body Sculpture forms the finale of the fifth series of body:language talks at the Lilian Baylis Studio, curated by writer and dramaturg, Guy Cools, in which artists are interviewed about the role of the body in their work. The event will explore Gormley's previous collaborations with renowned choreographers, including Akram Khan, and Sadler's Wells Associate Artists Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui and Hofesh Schechter.
In the past, Gormley has partnered with these choreographers on several major dance shows, working with Khan and Cherkaoui on Zero Degrees (2005), with Cherkaoui on Sutra (2008), and more recently with Schechter on last year's spectacular audio-visual experience Survivor .
This talk will appeal to dance fans and art-lovers alike, as the boundaries between disciplines have been tested, dissolved and renegotiated through Gormley's collaborative efforts.
