This series of Sheaffer Sunday Matinee concerts, held in the atmospheric surroundings of St John’s Smith Square, has charmed critics and audiences alike with an enlightening combination of live piano music and dramatic monologue.
This is the third composer portrait penned and compiled by Lucy Parham. Taking the form of a personal journey, performed with characteristic brilliance by Simon Russell Beale, the concert builds an unparalleled picture of Claude Debussy, to mark his 150th anniversary. As Parham performs a selection of music Debussy’s dazzling repotoire skills, Russell Beale will explore the composer’s complex personal life. Then the audience will be invited to share their own thoughts with the performers is a post-concert Q and A, hosted by Radio 3’s classical aficionado Petroc Trelawny.
About Lucy Parham
After winning Young Musician of the Year in 1984 Lucy Parham has remained on of our most celebrated pianists, performing with flair and sensitivity. Her imaginative inclusion of acting in the more traditional classical concert format has been described as ‘trailblazing’ and ‘one of the must-see events on the musical calendar’ by BBC Music Magazine. Parham has worked with a selection of the most talented thespians including Dominic West and Henry Goodman, and, now, the inimitable Oliver-winning Simon Russell Beale.
