Best-selling crime authors Lucie Whitehouse and Julie Corbin join journalist Alex Heminsley to discuss The Rise of the Marriage Thriller, literature's darkest new genre.
The feel good fluff of Chick Lit has been replaced by a new and altogether darker genre. As last year's most talked about novel, Gillian Flynn's Gone Girl (the film version comes out this autumn) shows, there is a growing taste for tales of marriages that are the very opposite of 'happily ever after'. "Chick Noir", as the latest literary trend has been dubbed, directs the chilling trope of psychological thrillers to a domestic setting. And the intimate intensity of the familiar homely setting gives the perfect foil for intriging and plot twists and sinister crimes.
Lucie Whitehouse is the author of the stunningly shocking thriller Before we Met, which The Independent described as a “fiendishly spun tissue of lies and charm eventually gives way to a bloody showdown”. And Julie Corbin has written three domestic thrillers, with the forth Now That You're Gone due to be published in July.
This promises to be an illuminating literary salon, with a deliciously dark subject matter.
