At a restaurant in Soho the other night, pretty much every single woman, including myself, was wearing a tank top.
Call it the retro influence of the 90s, tank tops have become the must-have piece for the season. Worn by fashion influencers and celebrities everywhere, it is the one item you need to own this summer.
Of course, the humble tank top has been around for many years.
In fact, tankmania started in the 30s when Hollywood icon Clark Gabble revealed his undergarment in the movie It Happened One Night. It quickly became a statement of male sexiness – especially when worn by James Dean and Marlon Brando – but was also associated with a certain kind of machismo.
In the 90s and 00s, tank tops took women's fashion by storm, from Kate Moss' off-duty looks to Beyoncé's halterneck version in her Crazy in Love video.
And with the Y2K revival, fashion houses have brought tank tops back to centre stage: they were the much talked about item at Bottega Veneta, Prada and Loewe AW22 shows.
