This child friendly opera is an enchanting nautical fantasy, accompanied by live music and monstrous puppetry. The story follows fourteen year old Ulla, who is attempting to become the youngest person to sail the world single-handedly in her trusty sailing boat 'The Homer', with only her cat Binnacle to keep her company on the harsh, dangerous seas.
All is not plain sailing, as our heroine is detained by mythical creatures and obstacles on her journey, including Cy-ops, the one-eyed over-keen robotic customs official who mistakes her cat for smuggled contraband, and Sylla, the dangerous sea creature twisted beyond recognition by radioactive rubbish dumped into the sea. Throughout Ulla's friends and family (based closely on the Sirens) call out to her from across the waves, tempting her home.
This is a wonderful opera for families with a sense of fun and wonder and an excellent introduction to ancient Greek mythology.
