7 must-go-to events across South Bank this winter
As we countdown to Christmas, London is bursting at the seams with places to eat, drink and be merry, but the choice can be somewhat overwhelming.
Thank goodness, then, for South Bank – London's one-stop shop for all your festive needs this Christmas. A pedestrianised zone, running from Lambeth Bridge to Blackfriar's Bridge and back away from the river to St George's Circus, the South Bank is abuzz with things to do, see, eat and buy this winter.
From a Finnish rooftop sauna and delicious lashings of mulled wine at Wintertime Festival, to sure-to-sell out family theatre and champagne receptions at NYE, long wintry nights are bright along the South Bank.
Here's our guide to the best things to do in South Bank London this winter!
Writer Dennis Kelly (of Matilda the Musical prestige), John Tiffany (director of Harry Potter and Cursed Child), and Disney Theatrical Productions turn their golden touch to Walt Disney's Pinocchio for a 'dazzling' new National Theatre musical production.
From Geppetto's workshop to the deepest depths of the ocean, we follow Pinocchio – a stringed puppet on a quest to become a real boy – and his trusty guide Jiminy Cricket, through the perils of a cruel puppet master, the forbidden vices of Pleasure Island and into the bowels of a giant whale.
As his nose grows long with lies and he's morphed into a donkey, Pinocchio learns how to be brave, truthful, and unselfish.
It's the first time the 1940 film has been adapted for the stage. The Oscar-winning score will feature prominently in the production, as will classics including 'I've Got No Strings' and 'When you Wish Upon a Star', which will be newly arranged by Tony-winning musical director Martin Lowe.
