Since 1912, the story has been endlessly adapted, first and most notably to comics, and thrust onto TV and the silver screen. This summer, David Yates, director of the final Harry Potter films, is adding to this towering pile of adaptations, with his own star-studded reimagining.
The Legend of Tarzan returns to the big screen with a shimmering CGI jungle with an equally glittering cast that includes Margot Robbie as Jane, Alexander Skarsgård as Tarzan and Samuel L. Jackson.
Yates takes the story forward, to a time when Tarzan, having acclimated to life in London, is called back to his former home in the jungle to investigate the sinister activities at a mining encampment. Speaking to Culture Whisper, Yates said that despite being based on an Edwardian classic, The Legend of Tarzan tackles issues that still fascinate us today: our inner beasts, the environment and the struggle between good and bad.
