Cutting-edge contemporary dance is something that many adults can find challenging, therefore it may come as somewhat of a surprise that there could be a successful contemporary dance show for kids. And yet Mons is just that.
This innovative production is the work of Nats Nus Dansa, a pioneering Catalan dance company founded in 1987 by choreographer Toni Mira. Since 1998, the company has expanded its original practice to develop captivating dance productions for children, which incorporate physical theatre, a refreshing sense of humour, and sophisticated visual effects achieved through video technology and atmospheric lighting.
Their Mons show, which runs from 16-17 November at the Lilian Baylis Studio, is based on the intriguing work of Jimmy Liao, a Taiwanese author and illustrator. Liao's simple but potent stories and charming illustrations have captivated the imaginations of children worldwide, having been translated into dozens of different languages. Nats Nus Dansa take his inspirational narratives and transform them into compelling movement sequences set to enchanting music, and despite the absence of a script, the dancers are able to communicate wholly through their bodies in this masterclass of gesture and expression.
Audiences are invited to enter a doorway to a magical world in which anything is possible. They will encounter giant flowers, playful dancing clouds and enchanted forests, in what is frequently an uplifting celebration of the beauty of nature and its power within the childhood imagination. At times surreal, at others touching, Mons is an excellent way to introduce young audiences to contemporary dance in a fun and accessible way.
