Playing for Peace, Peter and the Wolf

Playing for Peace is the name of a band of classical musicians who cross all boundaries and speak the international language of music. Peace, unity and hope through music is their motto, and they put that into action with a must-go concert on Sunday 26 June from 3PM,

Sir Michael Palin is the guest narrator in the ever-popular tale in music, Peter and the Wolf. The composer's grandson, himself a composer and french horn player, Gabriel Prokofiev, is among the players.

The conductor will be Anglo-Russian Petr Limonov. Players are from London’s top orchestras and guests include 11- year old Ukrainian star violinist Corey Sheldunov.

Peter and the Wolf, telling the story of plucky Peter and his quest in the forest, is performed in the heart of Covent Garden Market. Listen out for the oboe depicting the unlucky duck, the bassoon as grumpy grandfather, and the sprightly strings as brave Peter, among the instrumental portraits of the characters.

Playing for Peace was born in March, when more than 200 classical musicians came together in Trafalgar Square to play together in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine.

In celebrating the best of Russian music, and bringing together musicians of all nationalities, this Peter and the Wolf rises above current tensions and rejoices in music's capacity to break down barriers, and outlive hostility.

Money raised will go to DEC Ukraine, to help those fleeing the war in their country.
