Mixing post-punk with classic rock to create a raw, visceral sound, The Hold Steady are known for their intricate narratives, weaving characters, cities and themes to create a social commentary through their music.
Influenced by bands such as Thin Lizzy, there is a strong emphasis on landslide guitar solos (led by Kubler) and heavy Eighties percussive sounds. Hints of Meat Loaf and even Green Day creep into their richly layered rock aesthetic.
