Much has been made of the anonymity of electronic music. “Drops” and bleeps over emotive guitar, laptops over instruments, samples over originality, cool over personality.
Not so with hotshot producer Jamie xx, who has a one of the most distinctive styles around. His work is not just atmospheric, he manages to bring both personality and emotion to electronic music. Have a listen to tracks like Far Nearer or the brand new Gosh. Jamie's DIY minimalism is irresistible: full of light and tentative ascents, textured with London grit.
Luckily for London, the producer has just announced a hometown show in honour of his long awaited debut solo album, In Colour.
Jamie xx was the driving force behind Mercury Music Prize winning group The xx, who made a stir back in 2009. Since then, the producer has embarked on a solo path which highlights his immense skills as a producer and remix artist. In 2010, he won critical acclaim with the album We’re New Here, which was a collaborative celebration and reworking with the legendary musician Gil Scott Heron.
Following this venture, Jamie xx has gone on to remix the likes of Radiohead, Adele and work on tracks with Drake and Rihanna.
His Shepherd Bush date won’t just be your average dance night. Yes, there’ll be a hip, young crowd and lots of clutching at waterbottles: but it’s also a rare chance to see one of the most exciting talents on the scene doing what he does best.
