There was always something charmingly uncool about Paul McCartney. He bumbled. He was polite and organized, where Lennon was maverick and difficult. He wrote lovey-dovey songs. He told tales: the 1967 interview where he admitted taking LSD must have elicited a groan of despair from the rest of the band. In short, he’s no-one’s favourite Beatle.
But this is an enormous injustice. McCartney is quite simply the best pop songwriter of all time. The untrained Liverpudlian had a real feel for the formal elements of music: the structure of songs, the harmonies, melodies and parts.
All of the catchiest Beatles Songs were penned by McCartney alone: ‘Yesterday’, ‘Penny Lane’, ‘Hey Jude’, ‘Let it Be; ‘Love Me Do’, ‘All Your Loving’, ‘Can’t Buy Me Love’, ‘Got To Get You Into My Life’, ‘Eleanor Rigby’, ‘Ob La Di’, ‘Back in the USSR’, ‘Yellow Submarine’. The list goes on (and on, and on- McCartney single-handedly wrote half of all the Beatles songs.)
As a solo artist, he has been just as productive. Since the Beatles broke up in 1970, McCartney has released 24 albums, or with his project Wings. He has worked with countless collaborators- most recently, Rihanna and Kanye West.
As a result, he has an enormous back catalogue to draw from this May, when he’ll play the 02 Arena: 50 years afterYesterday was number one in the charts, with absolutely nothing left to prove.
Seize this chance to see the man who shaped the history of pop music.
