Taylor Swift has never been far from the headlines. Whether it be for her music or scandalous public moments - such as Kanye’s now infamous interruption during her thank you speech at the VMA Awards - Swift has been heavily in the spotlight for some time now. She has unarguably carved out her own niche in the music world: embracing her Nashville, Tennessee roots she has offered a more pop-friendly take on classic American country music tropes.
Whilst tabloid stories sometimes threaten to overshadow Swift’s undoubted ability, it’s of no detriment to her songwriting prowess. She can proudly declare to being the chief songwriter across all four of her albums, Taylor Swift, Fearless, Speak Now and Red, a rare occurrence in today’s pop landscape.
As you would predict of a chart-conquering musician like Swift, she will be heading straight to the O2 for the London stretch of her tour. What shouldn’t be overlooked however, is that she has five consecutive dates there! This speaks volumes for her crossover success in Britain, as well as her relentless tour schedule and insatiable work ethic. Perhaps this is what separates her from the chaff of numerous other female American pop stars that are far less memorable. Swift isn’t afraid to go it alone and bravely traverse a path that had hitherto remained untouched; namely bringing country music to a wider audience who otherwise might not have encountered it. For that alone, Swift deserves our attention and respect. Ignore what Kanye thinks.
