Drum great and former Chick Corea sideman Dave Weckl returns to Ronnie Scott’s with a new acoustic project, featuring Gary Meek on sax, Makoto Ozone on piano and hammond B3 organ, and Tom Kennedy on bass.
Weckl was raised on a diet of jazz, soul and R&B and became a key player on New York’s burgeoning fusion scene in the early 1980s. After catching the eye of fellow drummer Peter Erskine and sax great Michael Brecker, he joined French Toast with heavyweight pianist Michel Camilo and bassist Anthony Jackson. From there he racked up sessions and tours with the likes of Simon and Garfunkel, George Benson, Madonna, Diana Ross and Robert Plant before getting the call up to join piano icon Chick Corea’s Elektric Band in 1985.
In recent year’s he’s worked extensively with guitar giant Mike Stern. While touring with Stern in 2013 he jammed with Ozone and Kennedy on a nightly basis and the acoustic band was born. Their debut release, Of The Same Mind, is a blend of jazz, funk and latin which offsets bluesy shuffles, like Something's Happening, with fiery swingers and hip swaying salsa grooves. A thrashing, up-tempo take on Miles Davis classic All Blues is also in the mix.
The way we see it, Weckl has formed the ultimate jam band. All four men have chops to burn, not to mention an innate sense of groove. Watching them stretch out at Ronnie Scott’s will be a thrill.
