No-one could accuse St. Andrews' Kenny Anderson, AKA King Creosote, of laziness. Even since 2011's Mercury-nominated Diamond Mine, a full-blown collaboration with sometime producer Jon Hopkins (more commonly found making electronica and soundtracking indie films), Anderson has released 5 EPs and three albums (plus an expanded re-issue), taking his total to over 40 releases since the turn of the millennium.
The latest of these, From Scotland with Love, was released to accompany a feature-length documentary of the same name that formed a part of the cultural festival that accompanied the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow. The documentary is pieced together from archive film footage, a collaboration between BBC Scotland, the National Library of Scotland and others, and is a fascinating, charming and occasionally moving insight into Scotland's past.
To accompany the film, King Creosote has crafted a beautiful collection of sweeping, swirling melodies accompanying haunting lyrics inspired by and drawn directly from the characters seen in the footage, forming both soundtrack and narration, largely new material but featuring some drawn and re-worked from the extensive KC back catalogue (album opener 'Something to Believe In', for example, originally appeared in the early noughties).
The beautiful surroundings of Islington's Union Chapel, will provide a perfect backdrop for Anderson's inimitable folk sound, with his voice always hovering between charming and haunting. With one show already fully booked, get your tickets quickly to avoid missing out!
