Elusive R&B superstar Lauryn Hill to make rare appearance at the O2 Academy Brixton on September 20
For a musician who’s only ever released one solo album, Lauryn Hill has an impressive reputation. Widely heralded as one of the most significant and influential releases of the 1990s, The Miseducation of Lauryn Hill has sold over twelve million copies, and with good reason.
The album is brimming with wisdom, creativity, and musical eclecticism: a heady mix of hip-hop beats, searing vocals, razor-sharp raps and mature, emotive lyricism. Understandably, it has become a classic, plundered by subsequent generations on the hunt for inspiration.
Prior to her solo work, Lauryn Hill was one third of experimental hip-hop trio The Fugees, who combined hip-hop’s energy and politics with soul’s emotion and melodicism. Best remembered for their version of ‘Killing Me Softly With His Song’, the trio built up a varied and acclaimed body of work before parting ways in 1997.
Hill is one of contemporary’s music most elusive talents;her influence is everywhere, but her public appearances are few and far between. Her performance at the O2 Academy Brixton is therefore a rare opportunity for music fans to watch to a remarkable talent.
