Catch emerging piano talent Andrew McCormack at Kings Place this September as he arrives on the jazz world stage.
A chance to see the British born pianist, now based in New York, back on home turf following the release of his latest album, First Light.
Hailed by the critics as McCormack’s arrival on the world stage and as his most assured release to date, First Light received it’s London premiere in July of this year when the pianist appeared with his New York trio, which features bassist Zack Lober and drummerColin Stranahan, before a packed Pizza Express Jazz Club.
Despite the difference of lineup for this Kings Place outing, for which McCormack has called upon long-term collaborators drummer Troy Miller and bassist Chris Hill – his UK trio – the repertoire is sure to be just as fresh.
Inspired by his experiences in New York, McCormack’s new compositions are both imaginative and varied. Stately, classical themes, like the melancholic fuge ofGotham Town, stand side by side with shimmering, post bop swingers such as Prospect Park, the album’s bright and breezy opener featuring one of many outstanding, light footed solos for the pianist.
Renown for his work as sideman with the likes of Mercury-nominated saxophonist Denys Baptiste and Grammy-nominated saxophonist Jean Toussaint, and for his duo collaborations with saxophonist Jason Yarde, McCormack has taken a little longer to firmly establish himself as a leader of international repute. With First Light he does so emphatically and 2014 looks to be the highpoint of his career so far. Head over to Kings Place to catch him at his best.
