One of the most exciting young players on the European jazz scene, Norwegian saxophonist Marius Neset has been turning heads since the release of his first album, Golden Explosion, back in 2011. The visceral virtuosity of his improvisations has led many critics to compare him to the late Michael Brecker while the rhythmic complexity and thrilling unpredictability of his compositions displays the influence of his mentor and former tutor, pianist Django Bates.
Expect all of that and more from this Ronnie Scott's appearance in which Neset unveils his latest project, a collaboration with the 11 piece Trondheim Orchestra with whom he released Lion earlier this year.
With brass-led grooves, arresting tempo changes and twisting, folk-tinged melodies, Neset's compositions (some of them scaled-up versions of earlier works) are among his strongest yet, drawing a wealth of colours from an ensemble which features many of Scandinavia's uprising stars.
