Azealia Banks is quite rude. The American rapper and singer can belt out a tune, but she’s really known for her filthy language. 212 was the trash-talking rap whose infamous line 'I bet that c*nt gettin’ eaten' impressed itself indelibly on the public imagination when it came out in 2011. It was a line that got noticed and you can bet the crowd at Brixton Academy will go wild when she plays it on September 19.
This won’t be a show for the faint of heart. Having spent a lot of time touring since the release of 212 two years ago, Miss Banks, A.K.A Yung Rapunxel, has learned how to bring her audience to a frenzy.
Of course, all this time on the road is time outside of the studio. All Azealia's produced since 2011 is an EP and a mix-tape, having repeatedly pushed back the release of her debut album Broke with Expensive Taste (now due out in January).
There’s a chance Miss Banks been distracted from her work by all the celeb-feuds she’s started. Never one to shy away from controversy, the rapper has delighted the press by repeatedly antagonizing stars of the (female) pop pantheon like Lady Gaga, Lily Allen, Nicki Minaj, Lil’Kim, Rita Ora, Iggy Azalea ... An impressive roster for someone who’s still only 22—so we’ll forgive her procrastination.
Anyway, even if her shows lack fresh material, we can guarantee you won’t be bored. Azealia is all spectacle. She prances around on stage in glitzy-glam mermaid outfits, technicolour weaves cascading down her back, while she spits out fresh rhymes over bass-heavy, club-happy tunes. Azealia’s lyrics might not exactly have much in the way of substance, but her vocal delivery displays impressive control. Staccato consonants and cushy vowels come out so fast you think they’re in danger of slipping away from her. They never do. Azealia’s tempestuous, but she knows what she’s doing.
