But, however you knew her before, it’s imperative that you now think of Charlotte Gainsbourg as the etherial creator of moreish electronic pop.
Last year, Gainsbourg launched her new album, Rest and now she’s welcomed in the new year with the announcement of a European tour and her first London date at the Village Underground. It's her first visit to the capital since 2012.
Mostly in French, Rest offers an intimate look at Gainsbourg's struggles with grief and loss. The album also gives us the first taste of Gainsbourg's own lyrics in Kate, one of the most notable songs on the record.
Tragedy was already circling Gainsbourg when she started writing Rest – the follow-up to the 2009 album IRM. Desperate to escape the place where she encountered her great unhappiness, Gainsbourg fled Paris for New York and joined forces with produced SebastiAn – best known for his work with Frank Ocean – where the two of them spent a year writing and recording this album.
Distressing, raw and ever clever, Rest gives us velvety soft melodies doomed to drag heart-breaking lyrics on their soothing, calm backs. Don't miss your chance to see her.
