London is having a bit of a Tyrolean moment. The National Gallery’s Viennese Facing the Modern: The Portrait in Vienna 1900 exhibition was without doubt the most exciting Austrian import, but SpeckMobile, the food truck cum pop-up joint comes a close second. After almost a year of touring the food festival circuit, Speck has found a semi-permanent home at The Star of Kings in Kings Cross. This three-month residency is perfectly timed for bringing a hint of the ski season to town, although you won’t need a day on the slopes to earn a taste of Speck; the kitchen has a particularly light hand with this notoriously heavy cuisine.
From three different types of schnitzel with cranberry sauce and the house speciality of Grandma’s own dumplings, sauerkraut and sausages (highly recommended), to a vegan rosti and classic side dishes, you definitely won’t go hungry here. Everything is homemade, including the excellent sachertorte and apple strudel, and there’s a fantastically buttery white Grüner Veltliner on the drinks list, as well as classic Steiner beer to toast Tyrol-style.
Speckmobile is at The Star of Kings until the end of April.
