Art, medicine and fine-dining: Damian Hirst restaurant
The Turner-prize winning artist’s first attempt – simply called Pharmacy – saw the walls of its Notting Hill interiors lined with pill bottles, images of pills and medicinal sculptures. Waiters wore surgical gowns. The whole thing was so authentic, it sparked controversy when it opened in the ‘90s, for ‘misleading’ customers. David Bowie and Madonna were regulars.
Now Pharmacy has been reborn in Damien Hirst’s Vauxhall collection, the Newport Street Gallery. Expect the trademark minimalist interiors, with a medicinal twist and pill shaped stools. Whilst the gallery exhibits Hirst's art collection the restaurant will see his own art – including his Medicine Cabinets and butterfly Kaleidoscope paintings – on display to diners.
So that’s the design covered – as far as cuisine goes, it is also in very competent hands with a menu presided over by award winning chef and restauranteur Mark Hix. Expect Modern European fine dining reminiscent of Hix – quality food and fresh ingredients. The space is open as a canteen during the daytime serving visitors to the exhibition – and then again at night as a formal restaurant.
