Are your Monday nights usually spent at home, still recovering from the weekend and wishing you weren’t facing the start of another week at work? If so, we reckon we have the perfect antidote. This is England, launching on 10 February, is a new culinary pop-up that tours the country without leaving its Marylebone location.
Run by Check On, a partnership between One Night Only front-man George Craig and upcoming chef Terry Edwards, who has worked with Michel Roux Jr and Mark Hix, the 10-course menu takes guests on a whistle-stop tour of all that is great about British food.
Beginning in Helmsley, Yorkshire (or “Craig’s mum’s house”), the first course is Yorkshire puddings with onion gray. This is followed by a quick trip south for a Cornish pasty and a sneaky detour to the East of England for West Mersea for a Rock oyster, Maldon stout and beef cheek pie.
Then it’s back up the country’s backbone for belly pork, rhubarb and parsnips from Yorkshire and Goosnargh chicken accompanied by a caramelised cauliflower Lancashire cheese. Desert is a vanilla cream from Cambridge, followed by the classic Devonshire scone, while a Dorset blue cheese rounds the meal off.
The five-week Monday-night residency is taking place at Pieds Nus, itself a pop-up venture from David Moore – owner of the Michelin-starred restaurants Pied a Terre and L’Autre Pied. The entire tasting menu will set you back just £30, and with only 30 tickets available each night this will be an intimate evening of fantastic food.
However, if you miss out on tickets, not to worry - try Check On’s Sunday Dinners, on every week until April at Dead Doll’s Club on Hoxton Square, for a good old Northern roast.
