American Barbecue restaurants are as ubiquitous in the lives of London’s young professionals as beards and fixed-gear bicycles, with Pitt Cue in Soho and HotBox in Shoreditch turning out the best in American style barbecue food ever since the city was gripped by fever for everything smoked. Both operate with crowds queuing round the corner, teeming with excitement for their smokey treats.
Shotgun, Kingly Street
The team behind London’s premier American restaurant – the undisputed King of the Barbecue – The Lockhart in Marylebone, will be opening their second site, Shotgun restaurant on Kingly Street in Soho this autumn. The area around Kingly Court is now regarded as one of London’s foodie hubs, and Mississippi-born chef Brad McDonald will be treating his guests to a traditional ‘low and slow’ barbecue at Shotgun, drawing on the best of classic barbecue flavours to rub only the very best British produce, all smoked on Shotgun’s wood-burning smoker using English and European hardwoods.
The name lends itself to the Wild-West décor of the site, and the food is so authentic you’ll feel like you’re in a Cormac McCarthy novel. The cocktail bar on the groundfloor will be mixing a list of American-style cocktails compiled by Matt Whiley, aka The Talented Mr Fox, and will play around classics with contemporary twists. Their Triple Oaked Old Fashioned, for example, brings America’s favourite cocktail to 21st Century London with burnt sugar bitters and oaked bourbon.
Barbecue just got cool again. Get to Kingly Court as soon as it opens – you won’t be disappointed.
