Churros Garcia, Portobello Road Market, outside the Electric Cinema - every Saturday, 9am - 6pm
A family business, Churros Garcia has been a favourite with the city’s sweet-tooths for some time now. Their crispy golden churros, served with rich Valor chocolate, sugar or cinnamon, provide the perfect pick-me-up after a hard day’s bargain-hunting.
Jamon Jamon, Stall 89/90, Portobello Road - opposite Office, From 11.30am
Spanish paella stand Jamon Jamon has been serving hungry market-goers since 2007. Committed to using ingredients from local businesses, their signature dish attracts lengthy queues at lunchtime. Their seafood paella, however, is well worth the wait.
The Grain Shop, 269A Portobello Road
Serving takeaway boxes of hearty vegetarian food, The Grain Shop will satisfy even the most diehard of carnivores. Though it’s difficult to choose from their mouthwatering selection, we recommend their lentil dahl, served with fresh beetroot and a carrot salad.
Moroccan Fish Stall, Opposite Pizza East, 310 Portobello Road
It is well worth walking up to the far end of Portobello Road where prices drop and locals tend to gather. The Moroccan fish stall on the corner of Golborne Road is also reason enough, famed in the surrounding area for their whole grilled fish, giant fresh prawns and signature spiced tomato sauce.
Lisboa Pâtisserie, 57 Golborne Road
Also at the northern end of Portobello, and a meeting spot for the local Portuguese community, Lisboa has become a destination for one reason alone: their buttery, melt-in-the-mouth pastel de nata. It is worth being quick off the mark for these; they tend to sell out by early afternoon.
