These places are just as brilliant for browsing the bookshelves as they are for sitting down for a (three course!) meal. The Arthur Probsthain bookshop, specialising in Oriental and African books, has been open for over one hundred years. Situated opposite the British Museum, this family run store has a tea-room upstairs serving up a homemade traditional afternoon tea. Eat your fresh scones off bone china – try them with vanilla or black pepper jam for a refined twist on the British classic. Also make sure to have a look round the gallery displaying art from Asia, Africa and the Middle East. This is a really special spot – one of the few specialist and independent stores left in London.
