ALEXACHUNG 'Virginia' collection launches in Tokyo
The new ALEXACHUNG 'Virginia' collection is a tender display of nostalgia for the boho heroines of times past
The ghosts of the bohemian darlings of early 20th century London - poets, artists, writers and philosophers - haunt the new collection, which launched on the 5th of April in Japan. Designs carry the tone of a modern intellectual elegance, with prints, pattern and shapes hazily drawing on the quaint textile designs of Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant among others.
It launched in Tokyo, in an enchanted, circus-like spectacle:
ALEXACHUNG put on a higgildy-piggildy, yet magical, immersive presentation of the collection at the Earth Studio Tokyo. It was shown on a hand-painted set (designed by Illy Jankovich) inspired by the Bloombsbury Group's country retreat Charleston. It came complete with oversized flowers, an eccentric theatrical stage, and a large, luminous moon. Alexa said, 'I can’t really express the feeling of seeing something that was locked in my mind become a fully fleshed out reality, other than to say it was exhilarating'.
The set housed 23 models:
The set housed twenty-three models wearing ruffle peasant dresses, paisley robes and pyjamas, chilled out (and bright rusty red) denim, and laminated raincoats. They floated around, delighting in props which included fishing rods and gramophones as well as playful cardboard cut-outs of watering cans, flowers and busts, in a tender display of nostalgia for Chung's heroines of times past.
