2023 fashion trends to follow this year
Figuring out the big fashion trends of 2023 may feel a bit contrived, at times of tense geopolitics, budget cuts and revelations of greenwashing in the fashion industry.
Yet, in the grand cycle of things, what we wear reveals our mood, our needs, and how we perceive the world and want to be perceived.
So what about 2023? A close observation of the SS23 collections, as well as the latest street styles, celebrities’ looks, the many ‘TikTok cores’ (coastal grandma, anyone?) and outré series characters (from The White Lotus Portia’s absurd look to Sylvie’s OTT chic in Emily in Paris), all add their bit in the mix.
Beyond the ever-lasting attraction of nostalgic happier years – for the time being, it seems that we are quite fixated on the 90s and 00s – it appears that 2023 trends will oscillate between two extremes:
On one hand, we see a powerful return of quiet chic: practical and trusted luxury gives us a sense of control over a fragile and unpredictable world.
And on the other, a firm rejection of social norms or expectations opens the door for ultra-creative and subversive looks, with room for personal interpretation.
Will your 2023 fashion muse be Carolyn Bessette-Kennedy or Vivienne Westwood?
