From March 31, you can watch a movie like they do in the movies. Thanks to vintage fever, Drive-in theatres are enjoying a bit of a revival: and Rooftop Film Club are hoisting up their al-fresco screen at Alexandra Palace this year.
Drive-ins once accounted for a quarter of America’s movie screens. They have since declined, but are mythologised in our collective imagination of 1950s and 60s America, alongside stainless-steel diners, taffeta prom-dresses and boys named Biff.
The programme includes the greatest sing-along of all time, Grease (April 6), so you can finally enjoy belting out the lyrics to Beauty School Dropout in the privacy of your own greased lightnin'. If singing is not your thing, perhaps you should try a classic like Top Gun (April 4) or getting giggly to Richard Curtis rom-com About Time (April 1). For something a little meatier, we suggest catching multiple Oscar winner tip Gravity (April 10) on the big screen, whilst you still can. For parents with little kids, April 7 is the date to add to your diary, to enjoy the appropriately retro Back to the Future.
At only £22 a car, the whole event is an absolute steal. Stuff your best friend in the boot and come join in on a treasured relic of American pop-culture. We’ll see you at the Palace!
