Wilton’s Music Hall is one of the most beautiful and atmospheric venues in London - a true architectural gem. It’s a mid-19th century grand music hall attached to an 18th terrace of three houses and a pub - and is, quite simply, unique. Culture Whisper recommends you take your children to Father Nandru and the Wolves and enjoy it now, as it will be the last full production that Wilton’s will present for over a year. Happily, this is because they are undertaking building work to “breathe new life” into this gorgeous, historic place.
But this isn’t the only reason to go. It’s set to be a remarkable cultural experience, based on a true Romanian story about the Ceaușescu regime and its plan to destroy thousands of villages to gain land for agricultural production. Wilton’s has been under threat of closure for years, so this show is particularly fitting; award-winning playwright Julian Garner wrote it especially for this wonderful venue.
The story has something of a Romeo and Juliet vibe, and will be brilliantly educational for all children. Eveline, a girl with a lopsided face from the village's leading family, elopes with Vitim, the disabled son of the dancing family Roma. Father Nandru must save everyone in 24 hours, aware that just around the corner is a truly dangerous threat. Strange wolves appear from the forest, and Nandru has a dark vision of the death of the village. The community has to put their differences aside to triumph - something that all of us, young and old, can learn from. An immersive tale with puppetry and traditional folk music from Transylvania by Csergő Band guarantees your family will have a magical time.
