April 5 at the Invisible Dot is the jewel in the crown of a stellar 2014 Saturday Night Show lineup so far. Bridget Christie - winner of the 2013 Edinburgh Comedy Award - headlines, joined by the wry and clever Liam Williams – currently one of our favourite acts - and Chortle Student Comedy Finalist Matt Ewins.
Recently Christie’s acclaimed BBC Radio 4 series (Bridget Christie Minds the Gap) - and a TV act on Comedy Central’s Alternative Comedy Experience – have added further feathers to a heftily-plumaged cap. She comes to the Dot off the back of a sell-out run of her award-winning Soho Theatre show A Bic For Her: a sophisticated takedown of institutionalised sexism from which not even ball-point pens are safe. Hers is intelligent, silly and unapologetically feminist fare with touches of the absurd.
Stand-up aficionados will know Liam Williams as 33.3% of the touring sketch-troupe Sheeps and the Edinburgh Comedy Award Best Newcomer Nominee 2013. His solo work skips nimbly from snippy one-liners to profound, existential pop-cultural deconstructions delivered behind the held-back stage persona of a man who seems never quite at ease.
Matt Ewins is a sparky counterpart to Williams’s quieter vibe. His energetic sets bounce around in the realm of the observational, dealing in punchlines rather than shaggy dog stories. There’s an irresistible likeability to him that has endeared him instantly to audiences whenever we’ve seen him.
Like a tex-mex dip selection, this is a delicious smorgasbord of sharp yet complementary tastes.
