For those mini-Spielbergs in your brood, the BFI invites children to a series of workshops is inspired by their three month Sci-Fi: Days of Fear and Wonder season. Children will learn a whole variety of film making techniques.
The week kicks off with Whale’s 1933 adaptation of H.G. Wells’ The Invisible Man showing green-screen techniques, commencing with drama games and scripting, and finishing with a screening of the invisible man. Any sci-fi fanatic children will find these classics still have the same shock resonance as they did back in the day. Tuesday sees a mix of live action and stop animation with Gary Nelson’s The Black Hole…a sci-fi adventure, with lots of acting and dressing up for those who prefer to be in front of the camera not behind it. Wednesday
brings Sci-fi Messy Time with workshop and screening of Spielberg’s classic ET. The Extra Terrestrial. Children can make their own spaceship and alien or robot, along with a stop-motion animation starring their own creations, and the team will also be creating a space canvas. Finally, the BFI brings children the tools for scripting a sci-fi spoof, with a silly sci-fi slapstick workshop.
All films are then posted on the BFI youtube channel for children to see their creations at home. All film screenings are PG, start at 2.30pm daily and can be attended separately from the workshops. Don't miss the exclusive discount for Culture Whisper members at the BFI!
