So what are they? "Sort of architects, sort of not, sort of maybe" is the way that one member of the 16-strong collective describes Assemble. The direct action group work on projects for -often displaced - communities, designing and building places, transforming forgotten spaces into new pieces of urban fabric. They were nominated for their work in Liverpool's Granby Street, which rescued a series of abandoned houses that were due for demolition, turning them into a social enterprise. Heartwarming stuff in a time of relentless gentrification and heartless luxury redevelopment. Suddenly Damien Hirst's cow and Martin Creed's light look rather silly indeed.
Now, you can own a piece of Assemble's work, thanks to the newly opened Granby workshop. The handcrafted homewares are made of, or based on, debris from the neighbourhood. The designs are intended for Granby Street residents, but you can own one too, if you purchase before January 17. We particularly love the block-print fabrics, and stools, as well as the pebble-dashed bookends.
