Tucked away in Royal Academy's Burlington Gardens is a new translucent ceramic structure called Unexpected Hill, which brings this public space to life.
Created by the Istanbul-based architectural practice SO?, the installation is inspired by the geometric, colourful patterns in Islamic traditions and the ornamented vaulting of Muqarnas. Crafted into a spectacular three dimensional art work out of two dimensional tiles, you'll be delighted by this new installation rising out of the 19th century Royal Academy building. Inside Burlington Gardens you'll find another work inspired by ceramic tiles and geometry from Tamer Nak??ç?.
The two projects are the winners of a competition between four emerging design practices, chosen by the Royal Academy and Turkishceramics, to transform the space before David Chipperfield leads the major redevelopment of the museum site.
Over the summer SO?'s dramatic structure will be home to a number of activities and performances. Click here for the full programme.
